I found myself trying hard to convince my aunt that the mac products she uses can just as well be replaced with Nigerian brands like Dabota, House of Tara and zaron, and that they are as good as the international brands out there but sadly i failed.
You may ask why? Simple! A lot of us are of the opinion that anything Nigerian is not good, or that the Nigerian market can’t produce as good enough standard quality as the western counterpart – or better still a lot are not comfortable with changes especially when it has to do with their skin.
But the above is not the issue/focus for this article, our focus is probably the most important question on almost every makeup lover’s mind right now and that is “can the beauty industry take anymore makeup brands.
The beauty industry has seen a transition of celebrities, beauty influencer and even makeup enthusiast dabble into the makeup industry and take it over by storm. They took over the beauty scene by either collaborating with top known brands or by building their brand from ground up.
All this is great for all involved but the question remains, can the industry and the people handle anymore makeup brand? Some might say yes and sure enough we have seen the successful release of newly improved makeup kit from Kim Kardashian west beauty to Kylie cosmetics to the beast we all know as Fenty.
Also a host of celebrities and influencer like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B and Amrezy sold out collaborations which might make that response (yes) plausible, but can it truly take anymore?
With that question in mind, Now fast forward all this to the Nigerian Beauty scene. With brands like House of Tara, Kudy Cosmetics, Dabota and a list of many other Nigerian beauty influencers and celebrities like BM PRO, Chika Ike, and even recently joined – media personality and style guru Toke Makinwa who has over the years made names for themselves and passed every standard beauty requirement needed, can they succeed as well in this beauty industry?
Are we even willing to switch from international household names like MAC to international celebrities and influencers? Are we even willing to go extra by trying out our Nigerian celebrities and influencers makeup kit?
I ask all this questions because in the end all this brands seem to give different names but create the same lip stain color, texture of powder/foundation and eye color pallet. So to me what is the difference? Am i just buying for the brand name it carries or for the quality (cause almost all products are at affordable luxury) or cause it is my favourite celebrity or influencer?
What about you? when you visit your beauty store, why do you go with the brand you select?
